Meet Grand Rounds: Deborah Conrad, Chief Marketing Officer

The Marketing team at Grand Rounds is a multi-disciplinary group of marketers, communicators, and content creators responsible for integrated marketing programs and brand experiences that engage and delight our key audiences. Learn more about our new Chief Marketing Officer, Deborah Conrad, in the Q&A below.

What inspired you to join Grand Rounds?

For my next opportunity, I was looking for a mission that I could get behind and where I could bring my 25+ years of marketing and brand-building experience to make an impact. Grand Rounds’ mission is audacious and bold, and that really inspires me.

This is a special time for the company—we’re growing and scaling massively. As a marketer, I’m excited to build our brand and engage our customers and members in even more meaningful ways.

What are you most excited about in your new role?

I’m really excited about building a world-class marketing team where marketers can thrive and do their best work. This is a pivotal year for Grand Rounds—building our brand and driving momentum through marketing will be key to accomplishing our business goals.

What do you think the unique opportunities and challenges are for marketers in the health care industry?

Health care is very personal, which makes marketing in this space both a challenge and an opportunity. Traditional consumer or B2B marketing doesn’t always apply in health care. Empathy is the core of everything we do—it’s important to create messages and campaigns that resonate with our audiences as they go through very personal, and sometimes scary, health care experiences.  

My own journey as a patient and caregiver inspired me to get into health care marketing. Six years ago I had breast cancer. Thankfully, I’m in remission now, but it was a very traumatic experience in my life. I also lost my former husband to cancer. There’s so much we can all do to make health care a better experience for everyone.

How did you get started in Marketing?

I’ve always really enjoyed creative expression and communication. I find joy in taking something from air and turning it into something that’s really inspiring and engaging. Marketing gives me both a creative outlet as well as the opportunity to solve tough problems.  

I got started in marketing in a bit of a funny way: I was answering phones at a small computer company when I was 17, and they needed someone to help with ad layouts, newsletters, and press releases. I’d never done any of those things, but I gave it a shot. I really enjoyed the process and have been hooked ever since.  

If you could change one thing in health care today, what would it be?

Health care is a right and not a privilege. It needs to be better and more accessible so people can get the right care faster. I think this is where Grand Rounds is going to make an enormous difference in the world.

What are you most passionate about outside of the office?

I have many passions outside of work. I love live music and go to a lot of concerts. My husband and I also collect a lot of art. We also love food—in fact, my husband recently graduated from culinary school, and cooking has always been a big part of our lives. I love being in the moment with my friends and family, and all of these things—art, music, food—allow me to do just that.
